ATHLETICS.
HAWERA CLUB
The above club held another very successful sports meeting at the cricket | ground laßt evening. The weather was j ideal and a fail- number of spectators were present. Four events were run, results being as follows: 100 Yards Handicap (open)__First h6at: Whittington 1, Hooker 2. Second heat: Scott 1, Gabbie 2- Tuiru heat: Julian 1, Thorpe 2. Fourth heat: Greenbank 1, Matthew 2- Final: Scott. 1, Whittington 2, Greenbank 3-T-me, 11 1-5. Julian and Thorpe, who ran first and second in the best time (third heat), were unplaced in the final Relay Race—Defence Office I, P«aOffice 2, Bible Class 3. Three teams were entered for this event. Defence won mainly to Weir making fast time in his relay. Brown made a big effort for Bible Class in the last relay, and was only beaten for second place by a few yards. Time, 48 1-5----220 Yards—Jtfartlett 1, Hooker 2> Greenbank 3. Hooker 2ran very well m this race.
880 Yards—Brown 1, Jones 9. Hooker 3. A big field. Brown won after a great race in the last fifty yards with Jones. Grant and Sage als n ran well. Many new competitors were noticed at this meeting, and on the form displayed we should heaT further of them at future meetings. The officials werethe same as last meeting, Mr L Marter again acting very efficiently as starter. A word of thanks is du e to Messrs Hostick, Shepherd, Marter and Hooker, who prepared the ground during the afternoon, thereby contributing very much to the success of the meetmg.
