DEATH OF EX-JUDGE

HON. F. W. PENNEFATHER'S

BEQUESTS

y*Cable advice was received ".in Wellington this week of the death, on Sunday last at "Rathsallagh," Colbinstoun, County Wicklovv, Ireland, of the Hon. F. W. Pennefatherr, LL.D., at onetime a temporary judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. Deceased, who was in his sixty-ninth year, arrived^ in New Zealand in January, 1883, as A.D.C. to Sir William Jervois, Governor of New Zealand. Later he entered into practice in the legal profession in' the Dominion, being a partner of the late Mr. E. Baloombe Brown anii Mr. E. H. Dean. With Mr. Brown he was part author of '.'The Supreme Court Code," a book wjhich was freely used by members of the legal profession. He then took up the appointment of Professor of Law at Adelaide University, and during the absence of the late Sir Joshua Williams from New Zeaajnd in 18^8-99 occupied the position of temporary judge, of the New Zealand Supreme Court Bench. He then took up his residence in Ireland, and last visited New Zealand twelve years ago.

During his residence in New Zealand the late judge took a keen interest in the affaire of the Anglican Church, and Messrs 0.. and R. Beere, the executors of his New Zealand estate, announce that by his will he has bequeathed £5000 to .the Dunedin Anglican Cathedral Fund, £100, to the Anglican Boys' Home at the Hutt, and £100 to "whoever may be holding the office of Bishop of Wellington at my death." 'Last Christmas he donated £100 to the Wellington Anglican Cathedral Fund, £100 ito the general Church Fund, and £100 to St. Paul's Day School Fund. * Out of his New Zealand estate (which totals about £20,000) a sum of £6000 is bequeathed to St: Columbia's College, Rathfarnham, Dublin, y and a number of small bequests are made to different Anglican churches, in England and Ireland. The residue of the New Zealand estate is bequeathed to Mr. Pennefather's great niece,' -Audrey Marian Ftreese, of Ireland.
