UNCONTROLLED HAWTHORN
COMPLAINT BY ORCHARDISTS
(3Y TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
AUCKLAND, Feb.^ll. At a meeting of orchardists and others interested the question of legislation at the forthcoming short session wad loonsidered. Alternative suggestions were that hawthorn be declared a noxious, weed or brought under, con- .! trol throughout the Dominion by I hedges being kept to a height of five { feet. After several alternatives had been , discussed it was decided that the exej ytiye of the Central Fireblight Association be constituted a Parliamentary committee to arrange for the necessary legislation. It was also decided that a feeling exists in the minds of orchardists that the Government will,' not take action for the destruction and control of all infected hawthorn, whether in commercial fruit-growing areas or , dairying districts, because the £ nut-growing -industry is not considered sufficiently important to warrant interference with such hawthorn shelter in dairying !<>nd. The meeting asked for a definite | pronouncement from the Government i as to what steps are proposed to! be taken. V I
