-• —-— — .'v .' DEPARTMENT'S ESTIMATES. OONDITIONS~OF PURCHASE. (BT TBLEORATB—VRPoo *KSOCI»TSON * ■''■''■ WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. To-night'e Gazette states that the estimated average yields per acre -of wheat and oats for 1920-21, compiled from reports furnished by the Department of Agriculture for the Dominion, are as follows, the figures given being bushels per acre:— Wheat. Oats. North Island 30.01 27.69 Nelson -24.00 30.01 Marlborough '31.71 •' 44.38 flnnfo'fKiiT-ir OO «» . on
Canterbury , 28.63 30.49 Otago -........;............ 27.33 37.32 ! Southland 36.56 40.00 I The average (estimated} for the Dominion for the season 1920-21 is wheat 28.52 and oats 33.86. The average (actual) for the Dominion for jhe season 1919-20 is wheat 32.66 and oats 38.75. In accordance with the above estimates the total-yield of wheat for the Dominion should be approximately 5,975,000 bushels, as against an actual yield of 4,559,934 bushels for the seaeon 1919-20. The percentage of oats Jthreshed in 1919-20 was 34.79'0f the total area under that crop. Assuming that a .similar proportion is threshed this year, the total yield of grain should be approximately 5,520,000 bushels, as against an actual yield of 6,967,862 bushels for the previous season, but • from the information *o far 'available ' it would appear unlikely that the proportion of oats threshed this season will be as high as the season 1919-20. | > The Boardof Trade regulations con■j trolling the purchase of wheat were, gazetted to-day and come into force as! from to-day. These I regulations make it unlawful for any person to purchase,. offer, or agree to purchase, whether as 1 principal or agent, save t under /a. per- t ■mit issued by the Wheat Controller, ] any wheat of the harvest of. the season 1920-21 in New Zealand, or to be con- ] ' eerned in the - fulfilment of any, such \ purchase, whether made before or after j the publication of these regulations. An option of right of purchase is to be ] deemed an agreement to purchase. j i It is provided that in granting a per-; mit under these regulations the Wheat < Controller may impose such terms and •> conditions as to purchase and as to disposition or use of the wheat so pur- , chased as the controller thinks advis- j able for the due regulations and main-j tenance of the industries essential -■ for ] the public welfare. - Any such' permit may be granted or refused in the abso-' lute discretion of the Wheat Controller, , and Bhall^be revokable at the will of the ; ! Controller.- When any wheat has been ; purchased under any such permit it j i shall not be lawful for the purchaser , ' : to deal with it otherwise than in ac- \ coTdance with the terms and conditions ; ;' on which the .permit was granted. The ; | necessary powers of inquiry are given . j the Controller, and false representa-. \\ tinns to obtain"a pemait constitute an! , j offence against the regulations.
