•:X ' >■■ — — ■'• ; LAST NIGHT'S CARNIVAL. ANOTHER SPLENDID SUCCESS. Once again there was a. great crowd of spectators at the baths last evening, when the second carnival this week was held. Proceedings throughout were again very interesting, and good entries enabled splendid sport to be witnessed. The Hawera Band was [in attendance, and played a number of selections during the evening? The officials had everything in first-class -order, and everything went smoothly. = The result was that £26 19s was taken, and unfortunately a large number of 1 people had to be turned away. ! Following are the results of the competitions: ■■"■. 25 Yards Girls* Handicap, under 15 i —P. Brant 3sec) 1, L. Hart (2sec) 2, ID. Meyrick (3sec) 3. The girls used breaststroke in this race. Time, 26sec. 50 Yards Boys' Handicap, under 16 i —B. Higgs (lsec) 1, J. Loader (scr) ;2, L. Pettett (Bsec) 3. A good finish. Time, 48 2-ssec. ; 50 Yards Ladies' Handicap (Grant Cup)—M. Ekdahl (scr) 1, D. Machin (lsec) 2, D. Ingram (Bsec) 3. A good race, with a close finish. Time, 52 l-ssec. 75 .Yards Men's Junior Cup Handicap—F. Champion (scr) 1, E. Pickering (scr) 2, F. Grant (lsec) 3. A very exciting finish. Champion put in a, great spurt down the last 25 yards. Time, 59 3-ssec. 220 Yards Men's Senior Cup Handicap—N. A. Foden (9sec) 1, G. Barrett . (scr) 2, E. G. Foden (llsec) 3. This i was easily the race of the evening, and onlookers grew very v enthusiastic as the goal was reached. Foden's win was very popular. He put in a splendid finish, and showed great powersof endurance. Time, 3.11 4-5. 50 Yards Schoolboys' Lemonade and Bun Race—Dowdle 1, Campi 2, Walker 3. This proved a very amusing event, and the hard buns evidently took 6ome eating. Time, 48 l-ssec. "■'■.-, 50 Yards Novice Handicap (final)— - J. Ryan (ssec) 1, M. Brown (scr) 2, J. Cressey (scr) 3., There were six starters from the two heats, all of whom swam well. 50 Yards Men's Inter-club Handicap —First heat: M. Squire (4sec) l y F. Champion (3sec) 2, E. Pickering (2sec) 3. Time, 32 2-ssec. Second heat: L. Wilkinson (3sec) 1, E G. Foden1 (4sec) 2, H. Riley (6sec) 3. Time, 33 2-ssflc. Third heat: S. Shore (lOsec) 1, R. Ogden (lOsec) 2, H. Chadwick (9sec) 3. Time, 35sec. Final—S. Shore 1, ft. Ogden 2, E. G. Foden 3: Time, 35 l-ssec. 100 Yards Breaststroke Handicap— E. Bamford (lOsec) 1, Q: Barrett (scr) 2, N. A. Foden'(4sec) 3. A very interesting event. Barrett was asked to concede rather, too much, feui was only about two yards behind the winner at« the finish. Time, 1.34. "A 50 yards obstacle race; of "old buffers" was held, creating very great excitement, but owing 1» a general tangle in the pig net and interference with swimmers by the tangled people I the whole of the competitors were disqualified! 50 Yards Uodress Race—L. New (ssec) 1, H. Matthews (2sec) 2, H. Riley (scr) 3. No time taken. _Plunge—B. Higgs (15ft) 48ft lOin 1, H. Riley (10ft) 48ft 3iin 2, H. Wilson (10ft) 47ft sin 3. Barrett (2ft) 44ft o£m submerged lmin 13sec; Bennett (6cr) 46ft Bin (submerged 46sec). Later he. gave an exhibition plunge, and covered 47ft Bin.----25 Yards Ballon Race—Powdrell (scr) 1, Miss Langdon (lOsec) 2, Miss Lynskey (lOsec) 3. An amusing race. Powdrell won rather easily 100 Yards Ihter-club Medley Handicap (four strokes—one length side, stroke, one length on back, one length breaststroke, and one length optional) —F. Grant (scr) 1, Rees (6sec behind) 2, Cressey (lOsec) 3. This was a very interesting event, Rees making great headway when swimming his length on his back, but he lost pace with the breaststroke, and Grant established a lead, winning by about fire feet. Men's Dive —Rees and Higgs (dead heat). The judges were unable to separate these two competitors. The standard of diving shown by the seven entrants was high. 150 Yards Dual Flying Squadron— Barrett's team (Miss Campbell, Miss Ekdahl, Barrett and Wilkinson) 1. Two «ther teams entered. The' ladies swam one length and the men two.
