CORRESPONDENCE
NORMANBY SOLDIERS' MEMORISE
/ (To the Editor.) Sir, —Kindly permit me to say a few words through your paper for the benefit of the public. At a meeting held on Tuesday night of the Soldiers' Memorial Committee., the Ncorrespondent states, the committee subscription lists contained the name? of 131 subscribers to the total amount of £213 Is 9d, and that the value of the petitioners' subscriptions amounted .to £25 11s 6d, as reported by the chairman. Now,, sir, why did he not state how much of that £213 Is 9d had been paid in, of which I know £20 counted in the total has not been paid in. He (the chairman) goes on to state that the petition contained some names, instead of stating how many, which numbered three, for which I nave the written authority in the three people's own handwriting. He further states that to rescind the resolution passed at a meeting held on August 26, 1919, deciding fhat the memorial be erected at the school, would be casting a slur on the committee and canvassers. Now, sir, I would here fitate that -I think it is the public who have the slur cast on them, as ttie committee is a self-elected one, and the members have taken things into their own hands md hay« refused to let the public have a voice, but have expected* them to pay. The committee was composed of school committee men to the number of six out of nine. Th© commit, tee will have to take the credit o)>being about the only one that has refused *he public a right to have a say. Is this British fair play? Thanking you, sir, for your space,—l.am. etc., J. ARCHBOLD.
