ALTON
* (From Our Own Correspondent.)
MEMORIAL TO FALLEN SOLDIERS At a well-attended public meeting, held recently it was unanimously decided to go on with the project, started! some time previously, to erect a suit-, able memorial to the fallen soldiers of the Alton district. Already some £200 has been promised, and it looks as if the £300 needed will be raised without any trouble. The memorial, which ieto be of red granite, is to be erected in the local school grounds, and besides fulfilling its purpose as a monument and memorial to our glorious dead ifc will be a very attractive piece of work.
EDUCATIONAL
An outbreak of measles has laid lowmany of our little, ones, and the school/, attendance ..has suffered accordingly- . there being no fewer than 40 pupils absent during the week. The proficiency results this year were particularly goodfive gaining proficiency and one competency out of cix candidates. "Whea one recognises that the school has been considerably overcrowded this result is: especially pleasing. The lucky recipient of A. W. Willis, Ltd.'s, special dux prize this year is Claude Bowater, whose work throughout was deserving,, of high praise.
