SOLDIERS. MEMORIAL

Oft Thursday, October 20, in good weather, a large crowd assembled at ' the public school grounds to witness the unveiling of the memorial to the fallen soldiers (who had been pupils at our public school). Mr Middieton (as chairman of the memorial committee), -in a few well-chosen remarks, explained the object of the gathering. The school children,-.under the leadership- of the headmaster, sang the Na- >. tioaal Anthem, and Mr Midaleton further addressed the assembly, af-ter which the children and ali friends present were invited to smg that grand old hymn, "0 God, Our Help in Ages Past," and the addresses were 1 delivered by Messrs Hemingway (re- , presenting the Wanganui Education Board)., Banks (headmaster of the school), Adlam (chairman Town Board), and. Key Mclvor (chairman Waverley Patriotic League). Miss Soutkcombe (daughter of the chairman of the "WaYerley School Committee) was then askecl to unveii the monumenx, and after the Union Jack had fallen, and Miss Southcombe had turned on the water afc the drinking cups, Mr Faris (secretary of the committee), on her Dehalf, declared the monument unv.eiled and ready for" the

children's use as a #rinkma fountain. -"WVeaths were then placed round the basement by the school children, after wkkib, the assembly were asked to s-iag the hymn "Nearer My God to Thee." Mr Middletoo then gave another very short address, followed fay the &cv Mclyor, who read a. portion of Scripture. A firing party composed of members of the R.S.A- of Waverley., under Stalff Sergeant-Major Mah.on.ey, then fired three volleys of blank, and Bugler J. Pepper sounded the "Last Post." -The Rev Wilson then lead the assembly in prayer, and pronounced the Benediction. A half-holiday was observed j by all tradespeople in the town. After I the assembly dispersed, the committee and headmaster gathered all the wreaths, and taking them down to the cemetery, placed them on the following graves: Captain D. B. McDonald, killed in action; Lieutenant McDonald, 'killed in action; Sergeant C. McDonald, died jof sickness in New Zealand, and was buried in Waverley. BUSINESS CHANGES. Several changes- in businesses have taken place in, Waverley during the last few weeks. Messrs Huggins and Butler have sold out their garage to Mr J. McLeod. and Messrs Palmer and Gray^have sold their garage premises to the Farmers' Co-op., who,, rumour lias it, intend to increase the store room and open ut> in a larger way of business. The Commercial Hotel changed hands a few weeks ago, and mow I hear that Mr Fantham, of the (Clarendon Hotel, has also sold out. Mr S. J. Taylor, our popular aimer and taxi proprietor has, owing to iilhealth. disposed of his business, the purchaser being Mr L. Beswick, lately mr Mr Taylor's employ. Mr P. Grant, another employee, is also starting the running of a taxi-cab in the town. All theso changes, we. "hope, will help the town to advance, but what is! baaly wanted is the same as in all towns — some more residential buildings. Very Uttle -building has been done during the last five years, and houses are very scarce* FIRE BRIGADE. - On Wednesday-evening, October 20, at a meeting of the residents of the town, it was decided to try and resurrect .th&t&ve brigade. The late brigade Went tfcS?*ibr wani of financial support from, the townspeople^ and it is to be toped that now they have decided to t make another start, generous support will be Extended to them and help to, place them on a good footing,- both in number^ 'and -^finance. '
