NOTES AND COMMENTS.
(By "Maecenas.")
The Wellington Racing Club have already set auout on an extensive improvement scheme. This club is very progressive, and promise to rival the Auc-Kland Club in days to come. Thrace was sent home after the Wellington gathering, but was subsequently railed to Wellington again, and will take his place in the Grand National Hurdle field. It has now been decided to send Gold Kip to Riccarton. The chestnut has dono well since going back to the V.aikato: Despite this, i expect 11.9 to beat Gold Kip-in the Winter Cup. The Absurd-Cowl colt iv J. Brown's stable is a handsome 'fellow, and has already shown that he knows how to gallop. Santorini and Active are now train- ! ed at Waverley. Both are well forward, and should pay their way, as both are useful. Lord Formby ran capital races at the Egmont and Otaki meetings, and, providing the opposition is not too strong, this gelding may run well at New Plymouth next month. Nightraider won very easily at South Canterbury, and with 9.3 only is well handicapped in the Winter Cup. rleather Sprig showed a lot of pace at Napier Park and stays well, and with 9.11 in the Winter Cup.he should receive strong support io\ the race. Bob Barlow was unlucky enough to lose Generalissimo, which gelding died last week as the result of an accident caused when running in a small paddock. Generalissimo was much better than public form suggests, and had pace enough to win open- races. tJ. Thacker has Bi^ Push looking well, and I expect thi s gelding to run. prominently in early spring racing." During the absence*1 of trainers Lambess and Julian, Kauri King and Slow Coach have been under the care of C. Christie, at Trenthiam. Risingham and Parorangi, until recently at Hawera, are at present enjoymg a short spell at Trentham. Coalition and Master Strowan gave a splendid exhibition of jumping at Riccarton during the week, and this pair of capable "chasers" will strip very well on "National" day. C. Colaman -lit:s taken 'Deviation, Oaldcigh and General Advance to Riccarton. All these are .useful, but the class of horse opposing them down South /nay be too good for the Northerners.. Sandrmgham ran several capital races in the Hawke's Bay district, and on his showing there the ' chestnut should be prominent at the Taranaki Hunt Club "gathering. , The judge's box -on the Riccairton course has been raised' two feet to meet the wishes of those competent to pass an opinion. Some time ago the Auckland Racing Club. m}oved their judge's box back something like 12 feet, and in consequence, decisions have | been more satisfactory to the general j public since. i All Over and Ruddy figured as fay- ' oritss for th e Grand National Hurdles and Winter Cup, and judging by the . price offering, one would assume that j the pair had been supported by.well- ■ informed persons, but once again the lead *vas unreliable, as this P,aA\ a»d also Omalvu, have been withdrawn from Riccarton engagements. Thp names of All Talk and Jack Symons wer P . not telegraphed as acceptors for the National Hurdles, yet their names anpear as acceptors for the :racc named in the OlvrrstKhureh dailies. The omitting, of horses mr-cs from thp acceptance list is ronpt frequent, and to the' sr»ovt?nn: nublic appears n. most pxt^-ordinarv slvort^oTiing on. some 'responsible person's part.
