STRIKE AT ROTORUA
TROUBLE ABOUT A BONUS
ROTORUA, July 19
Men engaged laying the new water supply pipes in the Rotorua, .streets refused to resume work this morning. They receive 12s a day, and contend they ar© entitled to a bonus of 2s 8d in addition,, i-,s paid to others doing similar work. They state the, bonus was conceded, but not paid. Mr Hill/ resident officer, asked the men to resume work while he telegraphed the Tourist Department, which employs them. The men, who number about 40, declined. It is understood Mr Hill has telegraphed the Department. Later. The Tourist Department has offered < the striking water pipe-layers an additional shilling per day, to be retrospective to March Bth, making a daily wage of 13s, and putting the men on an equality with public works employees. The negotiations are continuing, but it is uncertain whether the men will accept.
