LONDON, June 11. Owing to the presence of the American, Gardener, the amateur golf final attracted more public interest^ than in any year since Traves won in 1904. In a stern, ding-dong struggle Gardener was two up at the fourth, all square at the ninth, and led in the eleventh. The position was all square at the twelfth. Then Gardener was two ■up at the eighteenth, but it came back to all square at the twenty-third. Then
Tolley led for the first time, being tw:o up at the twenty-seventh, three up at the thirty-second, one up at th e thirtysixth. Tolley won at the'thirty-seventh. Tolley is 24 years of age. He is s i x feet high and weighs fourteen stone. He began golf in boyhood. He was an officer in the Tank Corps, and won the Military Cross. He was a prisoner in Germany for a year. He distinguished himself in golf at Oxford, and is a tremendous driver.
In the ladies' golf final, Miss Joyce Wethered beat Miss Cecil Leitch 2 up and 1. Miss Wethered is 18 years old and a sister of the Oxford golf captain!
