(Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.) NEW YORK, June 12.At the Chicago Convention, Mr "Warren G. Harding, a senator from Ohio, secured the Republican nbmina"tion with 520 votes. The balloting at Chicago beat all re«ords. The eighth ballot showed: Senator W. G. Harding 533 Mr F. O. LowdeU, Governor of Illinois 307 General Leonard Wood, ex-Commander-in-Chief 299 It was then generally conceded that Senator Harding was certain' to win. *he nomination. He continued to gain in successive ballots, Governor Lowden aad General Wood remaining alanost unchanged in their positions. When. Senator Hardling's, selection appeared imminent, the supporters of Senator Hiram Johnson attempted to . induce him' to accept the Vice-Presir -dency, for which Governor Cooiidge . <of Massachusetts) Hater secured the npminat-ion. . : , Balloting was conducted amidst wild •excitement, unprecedented i^ the history of American conventions. The city lay under a torrid heat wave, ■delegates sitting in their shirt sleeves. "Women seconded a clumber of nominations for the first, time in history.
There is much disappointment -among De- Valera's supporters owing to the rejection from the Republican platform of any mention of Irish aspirations.
The Labor Party, comprising a seo"tion of that'which has broken away irom the American Federation of Labor, ia meetinlg at Chicago. It is in.•censed at the endorsement of compulsory arbitration, and threatens to turn its full support to the DemoWASHINGTON, Junte 11. The Presidential nominations of the - Republican Convention are General ~Wood, Governor Lowdeni, and Senator •Johnson. Additional nominations include Governor Coolidge, of Massachusetts; Mr Murray Butler, of New York; -Judge Britchard, of North. Suffragettes picketed the Republican Convention, at Chicago, as they are dissatisfied with the suffrage plank adopted by the Republicans. Prominent suffragettes stated that unless the Republicans induce the •Tthirty-sixth State to ratify the suffrage amendment they will trail the Republican Presidential nominee on Iris speaking tour, picketing every "meeting. -. ; ! MONTREAL. June 12. The American Federation of Labor Tneeting here unanimously condemned "the Republican Convention as reao--iioniary towards Labor's legitimate ■claims. It was decided to present "Labor's caße to the Democratic Contention.
