BUTTER PRICES
SUBSTANTIAL INCREASES PREDICTED.
_ An idea of the prices that can be expected.to rule for butter after July next was given by an authority directly concerned in the industry. He •stated that the control in connection with the Imperial Government's contract to purchase the Dominion's output would end on July 31, after which date there would he an; open market for the supply, with the result that a substantial increase in the price would, it was almost certain, be recorded.
The Auckland Star first made public this statement, and it was corroborated by many Wellington merchants, who stated (says the New Zealand Times) that ontee the open market was Secured the price was bound to jump. ■ "There is a world shortage," said one, "and the price for butter is almost sure to remain high."
''What about the £ommande.er ?" the Times reporter suggested. "Ah, now, "you are talking of something that lies ahead," was the response. "But 4n any case, commandeer or nto commandeer. I predict that the price of butter will not be this side of two shillings. It cannot be — the way things are at present.''
