(BY TELEGKAPH —PiIESS ASSOCIATION ) . WELLINGTON, Jan. 6 During the week ended January 5, twenty-one cases of influenza .were reported in the Wellington health district. There were eleven cases ot pneumonia.
Dr Makgi'.l, acting chief health officer, stated to-day tiiat tiie Dominion returns for the past tortnignt showed a very large diminution in the number of cases of influenza and pneumonia. During the weeu ending December 22, 248 cases of influenza were notified throughout the Dominion, whereas in the week ending January 5 there were but 107 notifications. Regarding pneumonia, 43 cases w ere notified in the week ending December 22, and 25 cases in the week ending January 5.
The chief diminution in influenza was in Auckland, where the number of cases in the week ending December 22 was 224, whle on.y 78 cases were reporttxl in the week ending January 5. In Canterbury there has been a marked decrease also. During the week ending December 22, 20 cases of influenza and 10 cases of pneumonia were notified, and only five cases of influenza and five cases of pneumonia were notified during the week ending January 5. Or Makgill added that every year for a long time a number of pneumonia cases following influenza had arisen, and the existence of such cases is of very little significance indeed. There is every reason to be satisfied with the present position, and there is nothing to suggest any alarm whatsoever. °
