j PATRIOTIC SOCIETY. 1 The annual meeting of the Patriotic . bociety was held on Monday evening Mast, tiiere being a good attendance of the committee, but only a fair number ot the public turned up. • The chairman read a report upon . the work of the society during the last , live years. Inter alia this, report,' after setting forth the aims of the society, gave the following figures representing the turnovers for each year of existence: 1914-15, £316 13s 6d: 1915-16, S/l 12s lid; 1916-17, £351 4s o*d; 1917-18, £717 19s lljd; 1918-19, £124 18s 4d—total, £1682 7s Hid. The 1919 balance-sheet to June 30 showed a credit balance of £35 14s Id. The delegates to the Eltham County Committee (Messrs- A. C. Pease arid' the chairman) had continued their work of attending to the needs of soldiers as occasion arose, and had been successful in obtaining grants and loans A J, nb"*c must: be Paid to the work of the War Relief Association and Eltham Repatriation Board for the prompt at- ] tention and help given at all times. ■ Ihe society had set up a Memorial Committee, with Mr Marx as chairman. That gentleman was unable to be present, hence his statement, emj bodied m the main report. The chair- • man said the committee had the matter of a memorial in hand. It was intended to hold a memorial service at the unveiling ceremony, and that the people of the district could then brinovoluntary contributions to pay for the cost of the memorial. The report concluded by thanking the public for ite support and with the expressed hope that justice would always be done to ou rreturned soldiers, and that they would soon settle down into civilian lire again. The report and balance-sheet was i adopted. i It was decided to Ke-elect all officebearers, as the society would'wind up very shortly. ' ! The matter of including on the Roll of Honor the names of all nurses and soldiers who had gone to the front ivom the Mangatoki riding was given a sympathetic hearing, and a motion to that effect was unanimously carried. Messrs. Pease and Cuvteis regretted being unable to carry on as delegates to the County Committee, and Messrs E J. Gilford and A. Corkill were elected. The meeting next discussed the question of holding a banquet to our district s returned soldiers. Several motions and amendments were thrown out, and the following finally passed: "That the arrangements for'the banquet be left in the hands of the ladies." The ladies have since met, find at a very enthusiastic meeting decided to hold a banquet in honor of , Nurse Rowntree and the Mangatoki riding returned soldiers and their wives, and that an invitation lie extended to the general public ; all returned soldiers of whatever district homer free, following the usual policy of the society.
