MANAIA.

(From. Our Own Correspondent.)

With relatives and friends of the; district a most enjoyable night's fun was spent oh Thursday last at the residence fit Mr C. Candy, Skeet road, Mangawhero. These functions have? been going on forsome time between the farmers of the district, mostly as a welcome home to the1 returned soldiers, and we were, pleased to see Driver ;M. D. Atkinson, who returnejd from the front, present' at the party on Thursday night last. Card playing, dancing, and singing were the order of the evening, and everyone enjoyed themselves. - An excellent supper was provided by the ladies, which waa much enjoyed, and at 2 a.m MrT. Gardiner, on behalf of all present, moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Candy for their hospitality and the welcome they had shown to all that night, and he hoped on some future occasion to be able to join in another' night's fun. After singing Auld Lang Syne all left for their respective homes.

I The plain and fancy dress masquerade gall to be held in the Town Hall on Wednesday night no doubt will be a big success. There are sure to be some excellent costumeis, and alrge entries are expected for the waltzing competitions. Mr Gardiner has a first-class orchestra engaged.1 The floor will be in perfect order.- and a firs;t>class supper • will bo provided. As this is the. last ball of the season a record house is expected.' The citizens of Manaia- and district extend a hearty welcome home to Private George Young, who has just returaqd from tho front after three years on active- service, and "visa him every prosperity and good luck. On Thursday night, in tho Manaia Town Hall, M r Deem, fields instructor,. will give an address on. root crops and as everyone is invited to attend", the Hall should be, well filled. It is a very important address, and every farmer in the district should be in attendance ' Mr Deem is an expert, and is well known i by all.the farmers, and I am sure that1 by listening; to him on Thursday night those present .will derive a lot of valuable information. r, i
