■ '■ '■-< : -♦ ' •■■■■■■■ ' (From Our Own Correspondent.) FANCY DItESS DANCE. The hall was packed on the occasion of th<j fancy drws dance held on Tuesday last. Visitors were present from all parts of the district. The function proved to be one of the most successful held here, and the. promoter. Mr H. Whitaker, is to he congratulated or the general success of the* gathering. First class music *va.s supplied by Miss Gardiner, ably assisted by Miss G. Harrison, a local player, who made a favorable debut as a pianist. Although the number of fancy dresses did not come up~to expectations, the display in the grand parade was very good, the "posters" showing ingenuity and task on the part of the wearers The following were the prize-winners: Fancy dress, Miss Trickle, Hawera (French Pierrot); character, Mrs H. Calder, Matapu (Bo Peep); poster, Mjss C. Walshe, Normanby (Continuance). Messrs M. Phillips and R. Hookei were awarded the men's prize. THE SCHOOL. The school grounds have recently undergone a general clean up. Surplus trees have'been felled, hedges trimmed, shrubs planted, arches and sun-mei house erected, and other improvement* made. Tho committee is to be commended for its enterprise. The improvements have made a wonderful difference to the grounds, -which now present quite a pleasing aspect. Credit is due t<: the schoolmistress. Miss.Laird,. whe spared no effort to get the work done, and who. on appealing to the generosity of residents, collected sufficient to de fray Ihe whole cost of the '-work.
