NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By "Maecenas.") The attendance at the Egmont\Vanganui Hunt Club meeting was not as large as expected, and in several races the totalisator hgures were very poor.
A large number of sportsmen from this Dominion have gone across to attend the Australian spring meetings. With such powerful teams as Mason's and Jones' operating, any fair judge should pay expenses out of supporting same. • fo
, Simon was looked on as a "moral" by his party last Wednesday, hut evidently he is not much good,* as,he was somewhat lucky in beating Crystal lalace for second dividend and place. The Auckland Racing Club intend giving £50,000 in stakes during the 1919-20 season, which amount is no more than it should be, considering the wealth of the northern club. For many years this club spent large amounts beautifying their grounds, a form of management which did not get the approval of some on the score of extravagance.
Egmoiit Park returned his supporters a good price for a second dividend. But for the accident, it is doubtful if Sylvia Park's son would have paid much more than a third of that returned.
Those who watched closely expected something to happen to Egmont Park, as his rider was decidedly on his wrong side, and MeCarten,* rider of Crystal Palace, was in no nay to blame.
A number of North Island horses are still at Riccarton, and it will be well into September before they even reach Wellington, as the shipping companies are not over-anxious to ship them.
Hawera will he well represented at the Marton meeting, which takes place on Wednesday next. 1 hope to have a few notes thereon ready for Tuesday's Star.
McDonnell gave Seasprite time to get on her legs at Waverley, with the result that the daughter of Hallowmas finished, as she is always capable of doing, fast. There is a tendency on the part of some riders to push their mounts along in the early stages of a race. This mode of riding often beats a good horse.
Bisogne has gone into W. Sharp's stable at Ellerslie, where he will be trained in future. By the way, Sharp prepared Silver Link for a couple of meetings last summer during an indisposition of W. Mantle Deeside's win in the Ladies' Bracelet at Waverley was due to poor handling on the part of the gentleman rider of Khartoum.
When he fell six furlongs from home Cornelian looked a "moral" in the Manaia Steeplechase, as up to that stage the son of Coronet had fenced well, and had just taken the lead. However, it was a good "try out for

Tiranga was very sore when sent out to contest the Waverley Handicap, and tailed right off.
Rose Queen was voted a certainty for the chief handicap last Wednesday, but was lucky in beating Robur for second honors. The latter jumped off badly, but finished very fast. Flying Master, which won the Hurdles at Waverley, is a great jumper, but is said to be troubled in the wind. This point was not tested on "Wednesday, as he was not asked to do his best.
Although a very fine fencer, Stetson was very j.uekv at several fences in the Hunt Cup. The son of Renown was not well ridden, and had no chance to
