MANAIA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) DEATH OF MR GORRIE. Genuine regret was felt by the citiI zens of Manaia and district when they heard of the sudden death of Mr Hugh Gome on Tuesday. Whilst proceeding to town from the residence of his son-in-law (Mr L.illey), Mr Gorrie col- , Japsed and died on the side of the road. He was a well-respected citizen, and great sympathy is felt for his 'family. The funeral took place at : Manaia, and was well attended by many of his old friends and acquaintances from Manaia and district. An inquest was held on Wednesday before Mr A. H. Christie, J.P. (actingcoroner) and the following jury: Messrs A. Franklin (foreman), J. B. Dunn, L. G. Nielson, J. A. G. Cosgrove, T. Gardiner, and C. J. Powell. The evidence of Mr Lilley showed that deceased had for some, time suffered from a- bad leg, caused through blood poisoning, but apart from this seemed in fairly good health, and had never complained. Dr Maunsell, who considered a post mortem examination unnecessary, ex- [ pressed the opinion that deceased had j died of heart failure. Blood poisoning I would probably weaken his heart to i some extent, but it was a common j thing for a man of that age to have j a weak heart. He had not attended j deceased previously. A mark on his , lip would be caused by his falling on ) his pipe. j Mr Hackett, who found deceased ' on the road in a dying condition, and Constable Scannell. who gave evidence of being called and subsequent action, having been heard, the jury returned a verdict in accordance with, the medical testimony.
