PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL.. £
(From a Correspondent.) On Friday, July 18, this long-looked^ ■ for event came to hand, and was un- I dcubtedly a huge success from every ' point of view. The evening proved • rather threatening, but the large crowd : picseut showed that the prospects of i the weather were a secondary consider- f iition, as far as, they were concerned, j The number of persons in fancy costume came as a surprise to many, they being • both varied and numerous, and many . of the costumes showed much and many hours of labor, eveniuaSy producing an article worthy of the name. The prize for best ladies' fancy costume was won.by Mrs J. S. Barrow, as "Night," and Mr A. Smith «on the ' gentlemen's pn^e, as "Farmer Wayback,'' both costumes being exceptionall- good, Mrs Barrow's standing out predominant. There being a. large number of children in fancy dress, the cop-mittee decided to allot prizes ior 4hem also, the successful on?s '><?mg Miss Laura Sharo (Japanese and JL aster Cecil Mickelson (Chinamairi. One feature of the evening that mull not be forgotten is the music provided by Mr R, Strong. This gentleman's orchestra was engaged for the ball, but owing to unforseen circumstances wae unable to be present. However, the music rendered by Mr Strong was all that could be desired, many persons expressing the opinion that he is an orchestra in himself.
