TRADE WITH THE ISLANDS
GOVERNOR'S STATEMENTS.
(BY TELEGRAPH —PBESS ASSOCIATION.)
GISBORNE, July 23. The Vice-R-egal party were accorded a civic reception to-day at a public luncheon. Subsequently Lord Liverpool dealt with the tour of the Pacific Islands. Referring to the fruit shortage in the Dominion, he said that within 1800 miles of New Zealand there wag a large enough fruit supply for all the needs of the Dominion, especially oranges. He hoped New Zealand would rise to the occasion with the opportunity that presented itself at Fiji. The Governor said that the colony had sent a message to the Government of New Zealand asking for a greater development of trade between Fiji and the Dominion. Here was another opening for New Zealand, hut it had to be recognised that. the same disadvantages— lack of shipping and labor—existed as m other parts. He paid a tribute to the New ZeaLmd Government's work in Samoa, where, in 1914. there were no schools and practically no communications, but now schools and wireless stations had been erected. He regarded it as the duty of the representative of the Sovereign to acquaint himself with all parts of the Dominion, and thought the King's representative should go to the Islands at least twice during; his term of office.
