' The distribution of small cards, alleged to have been printed in imitation of licensing ballot papers showing the bottom line struck out, used outside the booths at the licensing elections in April last, resulted in a number of people being charged at the Magistrate' Court, Auckland. Defendants had been at several booths around the city, where they had used small cards in giving voters their numbers from the electoral roll. The practice was to write the number on the back of the card and hand it to the voter. The Magistrate said an offence had been committed, and imposed a fine of £3 each and costs. '' The wireless operator in s.s. Karoola has reported that when his ship was off the north-west coast of Australia he received clear messages from an English low-power station in the North Sea ; which were transmitted on the ordinary short-range wave length of 600 metres. This feat was achieved with the new Expanse type magnifying valve receiver, designed and manufactured in Sydney by Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Limited. These receivers were originally designed by the company's managing director (Mr E. T. Frisk) for demonstrating the possibility of receiving messages in Australia direct from the Marconi Station at Carnarvon, in Wales. High prices upset the purse—'tis hard to make ends meet.
