TOWN BOARD

The Town Board met on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs J J Meldon (cnair), Nielson, Bridge, Christie, and W. Taylor. ' Among tne correspondence were the following: The Superintendent of the Government Advances Office notified that the Department had no power to advance money for the purpose of building workers' dwellings; but upon hearing that the Board was in a position to raise a loan which would not produce to the lender a return exceeding 5\ per cent per annum it would take further action. It was resolved to write to several building institutions asking tor quotations.

The Minister of Internal Affairs notified that legislation to enable local authorities to raise loans for peace memorials would be proposed to Parliament.

C. Bills, Dunedin, re cost of wire rubbish baskets. —It was resolved to order three of these.

Manaia Municipal Fire Brigade wrote asking for a rebate on hire of supper room, which they had for a recent welcome home.—The chairman stated that it was recorded in the minute book that no rebates were to be allowed. If it was done with one it would have to be done with others, and they were sorry they could not grant the brigade's request. F. H. Lowe wrote asking for increase in wages for Domain work. — Resolved to pay him 12s per day. An application from Walter Sutton for increase in wages for looking after the cemetery was held over. The Borough Council of New Plymouth wrote with reference to Taranaki County's proposed vehicle licensing by-law, informing the Board of the projected conference.—Messrs Bridge and Nielson were appointed delegates to represent the Board; and" the clerk was instructed to forward a letter of protest to the clerk of the Taranaki County Council.

It was resolved to have the main street cleaned up twice a week. The question of getting a new piano for the Town Hall was held over for the time being.

Mr Bridee'reported that Mr Christie and himself had inspected the Round Bush Reserve, and they had decided to recommend that it "be leased to Mr Voullaire for a term of five years at a rental of £10 per year. —It was resolved to lease the reserve to Mr VoulTaire for the term mentioned, providing he keeps the said property in good order.

WATER. AND DRAINAGE. Mr J. Sturroek's estimates for the supply olr dater and drainage for Ma--1 naia was read. The figures were as follow : Water Scheme. £ 7in. water main from- intake to town, about 5 miles,, including valves,, etc ' 13,400 Intake, concrete dam and wells 700 < Filters and settling, tanks, roughly 1,500 Reticulation in town, including ■ valves, etc., also house connec- | tions to fences 10,500 Contingencies 2,900J Total £29,000! Sewerage Scheme. j 9in. main outfall sewer from town- to sea, including man--1 holes, etc 3,300 Reticulation in town, including | manholes and concrete beneath sewer 13,100 House connections from sewer to street fences 1,300, Contingencies 2,300| Total £20,000 A modified scheme, reducing the water supply to a domestic scheme only, was also submitted at a cost of £37,000,' but Mr Sturroek did not recommend j this.
