CRICKET

It is a reproach to Hawera that, even allowing for the set-back given by the war, there has been no cricket at all for the last four seasons. The game is one that above all others should" be encouraged. The young Taranakian takes- to football as a duck to water. Not so, however, with cricket. More is needed in the way of good grounds and better circumstances, demanding more financial support and more encouragement and hfilp from, those who love the old game... Though Hawera has had good teams compared with other country provinces, it has always been a matter of difficulty to keep matters tip to the standard necessary to secure good cricket. One of the absolute essentials is to foster a love of the game at the primary schools. This, i t is much to be regretted, has not been th e case at Hawera District. School.- For many years the Hawera Club -endeavored to assist by giving the privileges of membership to a number of school boys nominated by the masters. It was a good opportunity, but, though it was clone year after year, advantage was not taf-ren to any great extent of the offer. The public schools should be the cradles of cricket. Unless it is so the game will not flourish as it should. Therp) are quite a I number of keen enthusiasts who are i anxious to see the game going again, '■ and who are willing to do all they can !to give the boys an opportunity to play. The question has been discussed I m a preliminary way, and as soon as S possible a meeting wil] be called to go [..into the question with a view to arranging for ground and all nee.-ssary arrangements. ]fa start is to lie made; j next season, it behoves everyone intrrj ested to do what they can to help. The ! matter must be 'taken in hand at an 1 early date.
