BUTTER AND CHEESE.
The Butter Committee meets in Wellington on May 20th (says the Wellington Post) to consider views of dairy companies, the Dominion over, on the butter equalisation levy in view of the' subsidy granted to flour millers out of the consolidated revenue. The general opinion of butter makers appears to be that if it is right for the Government out of the consolidated revenue to reimburse the millers for any losses they may incur in supplying the local market at a given price, it is equally right so to reimburse butter makers for the losses they may make in supplying the local market at a price under that. of the export valu e of their produce; Mail advices dated Montreal,, 25th March, were to the effect that cold-stored butter was commanding 59 to 61 cents. News of the intentions ■of the Imperial Government with respect to. the new make of Canadian cheese is awaited here with interest. The Canadian cheese for the 1919 season was due to appear in the Montreal market the second week in May.
