EFFICIENCY LEAGUE

MEETING AT ELTHAM

There was a fairly good attendance at the meeting at Eltham last night, when Messrs Powdrell, Belton ana Hawken spoke. The Mayor (Mr Crump) presided, and apologies for absence were received from Messrs Buckeridge and Corrigan. At the earlier stages of the meeting there was a good deal of heckling and interruption, but this eased off, and on the whole the speakers had a good hearing. Messrs Powdrell and Hawken spoke on lines previously reported. Mr Belton addressed himself mainly to the argument of efficiency, and spoke of the great opportunities offered in New Zealand to the man who, in addition to being industrious, was not handicapped by liquor. From the general point of view he added that the community was up against a great industrial war, and it had become necessary to run this country on efficient lines.

A number of questions were put more or less relevant to the subject, and a good-humored meeting ended. On the motion of Mr T. W. Owen a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speakers. A vote of thanks to the chair was passed.—Condensed from Eltham correspondent's notes.
