CORRESPONDENCE
THE REGENT NORMANBY SHOW. i (To the Editor.) , Sir,—There was considerable comment at the show last week that a returned soldiers' picnic,, and swimming carnival should have been held by Hawera residents on the afternoon of the People's Day of ou» show and it would appear that there must have been some mieunderstanding as to dates, or I feel sure these events would not have clashed. Noraianby in the past lias loyally supported Hawera _ institutions, and has been most - patriotic during the great ] war, and the Horticultural Society for the past tl're e years has generously given up the refreshment tent, for patriotic purposes, and last year gave half the proceeds of i3ie annual concert to the Returned Soldiers' Club. After 36 years of usefulness it seems scarcely fair that counter attractionsi should occur in the sister town. A remark that also caused comment was that the Normanby Show should be held in Hawera, when it was pointed out that Hawera had already made several efforts to run a Horticultural Society and failed. Now, sir, I am sure I am voicing the opinion of the executive when I state tihat when this old established Society has ended ife usefulness to the district there will be no surrender, but the good ship "Normanby Horticultural Society" will sink into oblivion with colors flying and nailed to the nidst.—l am, etc., CHARLES PAINE. !
