SOLDIERS AT PLAY
SPORTS IN EGYPT
A correspondent sends to the Star a report of the sports meeting held amongst the New Zealand Mounted Rifles in Egypt. He points out that there were one or two Taranaki lads amongst the competitors. There were representatives from all the N.Z. mounted, regiments, and in points Wellington obtained 23, Auckland 17, Canterbury 14, Machine Gun section. 9. The following are the results:—
100 yds Championship—Trooper Nankerville (Canterbury M.R.) 1. Sergt. Smith (Wellington M)R.) 2, Trooper J. B. Slight (Wellington M.R.) 3. High Jump—Trooper King (C.MR.) 1, Trooper Wallow (W.M.R.) 2. Sack Race —Trooper Nankerville (C.M.R.) 1, Lance-Corporal Oliver (A.M.8.) 2. - 220 yds Championship—Sergt. Smith (W.M.R.) 1, Trooper Cosgrieff (OM.R.) 2^ Trooper Netherland (A.M.R.1 * 3. \ cry good race, first five men almost in line. Hop, Step and Jump^-Trooper Fininglson (A.M.R.) 1, Trooper MoMulaty (Machine Gun) 2. Tug of war—Canterbury team 1, Wellington team 2, Machine Gun team 3. Three-leg Race —Troopers McKenzie and Smith (A.M.R.) 1--440 yds Championship—Trooper Wetherland (A.M.R.) 1, Trooper J. R. Slight (W.M.R.) 2, Trooper Cosgrieff (C.M.R.) 3. In this event Slight met with interference and ran into a flag, but recovered and finished very fast and was just beaten by inchesWrestling on Horseback—Wellington M.R. 1, Canterbury M.R. 2, Machine Gun Section 3. Rifle Exercise—Auckland M.R. 1, Canterbury M.R. 2, Machine Gun 3. Tag-of-War on Horseback—Wellington M.R. 1, Canterbury M.R. 2, Machine Gunners 3.
