At^ the Crampton Court-martial during Hearing of a charge of assaulting William Bertram Donovan, who was sentenced to 28 days' detention, lnvate Thomas Moynahan said he was working in the garden when Donovan arrived in ehaTge of Smith. Witness was ordered to his cell. While going there he saw Donovan with a rope round his neck. Later he heard scuffling, swearing and bumping against €ke wall als*> groans and the sound of dragging' Cross-examined, witness said his cell was sixteen feet from the yard Donald Kerr Porter, quartermaster afc' the baa-racks, said he saw Donovan with a rope round his neck, and Ciampton, bmith, Parmenter and Jenkins were illtreating him. Donovan was driven round the yard, punched, and kicked. Uranipton used his stick on Donovan's head while the man was on the ground Witness expected to hear of the man's death.

Porter was strongly re-examined by Mr Louj;linan"in legard to the statements which he had made and other witnesses had denied. H e first said he would withdraw the allegation that he saw Crampton use a stick on Donovan's head while the man was on the ground. Then he said his words were true though he did not wish to adhere to them.

Crampton, Jn evidence, admitted putting his hand over Donovan's chin to make him keep his head up, but deni<*d striking him. He had ibeen. warned that Donovan was a dangerous man. To the Court: They had to strap a rifle on Donovan, who tried to bit© Khe gnard.

Dr. Anderson gave evidence fchat he examined Donovan, but did not find any injuries. "

Monrose William Smith, whose evidence was taken at the hospital, said he was sergeant at the barracks and was in the yard when Ponovan was being drillf <*; , After water had been' thrown the third time in his face Donovan decided to do as he. was told. Witness did not see Crampton strike Donovan.
