RETURNED SOLDIERS'

REPORT

The monthly statement of the Re- { patriation Department shpwe that at the end of January 31,930 soldiers of ) the Expeditionary Force had returned to New Zealand, and had been registered by the Repatriation Department or the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department. Of these more than 14,000 nave stated that they do not require the assistance of the Department, and about 3000 have not replied to correspondence. The majority of the remainder of the total are men who are still convalescing. Only 363 men are reported as in need of work. .The statement shows the location of men whose names appear on "Employment Wanted Register" as unplaced in towns in this part of New Zealand:» Taihape 3, Marton 0, Feilding 2, Pal- I merston North 4, Taranaki 10, Wanga- j nui 3, Napier 10, Hastings 6, Danne- ! virke 4, Pahiatua 0, Wairarapa 5, ; Levin 3, Wellington 7, Blenheim 3, Nelson 5. There are 102 men on the register in Auckland, 59 in Christchurch, and 26 in Dunedin, as against only 7 in Wellington. An additional return gives particulars as to men being helped with 'turjion in.trades or industries: (a) Men approved for training in workshops, ■factories, etc. (wages subsidised by D.S.LD.—cases approved to date 233, under enquiry 62; (h) men approved for training in technical schools and kindred institutions (granted allowance of 20s per week from D.S.l.D.)—cases approved to date 226, under enquiry 32; (c) men approved for training on State farms, apiary 'work, poultry farming, etc. (provided with free board and lodging or an allowance of 20s per week from D.5.1.D.)- —cases approved to date 36, at present at Ruakura 12; (d) apprentices who are being financially assisted by D.S.I.D. (granted an allowance for a fixed period or until completion of apprenticeship, according to circumstances)—cases approved to date 17. '
