MURDER CHARGE FAILS

AUCKLAND, Feb. 13.

The trial of Edward Campbell (charged with murdering his wife by drowning her in the Wairoa river on July 19) was concluded. Accused was acquitted and discharged. Further medical evidence was heard. Dr Drier said he considered deceased1 had not been drowned on July 19, but on the following Sunday. Dr Horton said he considered the body got in the water shortly after midnight on Saturday following the day the Crown alleged the crime had been committed.

Accused made a statement denying having murdered his wife. He might have told the police he had done so, owing to a desire to end his life.

The jury found Campbell not nruilty after an hour's retirement.
