RED CROSS BALL

A plain, and fancy, dress ball, in aid of the Red Cross Funds, was held in the Hall on Tuesday last, and was an unqualified success. The function had been arranged ,by a committee of ladies, the most prominent members or which were Mesdames Bailey and Davies, assisted by Messrs H. Mellow and G. Keighley. The night was fine and the hall was crowded, many visitors being present from Stratford), Eltham, Kaponga and Otakeho. A waltzing eompetition,was an interest! wg item, and was won by Mr Meharry and Miss Melville; Mr J. Spoon and Miss Reid coming a close second. MEss Melville later on donated the gold medal she had won, and it was auctioned for £2 10s. The prize for best gentleman's fancy costume was won 1 easily by the "Glaxo Baby (Mr S. Mellow). The sale of tickets for a guess | as to the amount .of money contained m a cake given by Mrs A. Bailey realised £6 3s, but as no one guessed' I the exact amount, it was put up to auction and realised 13s. Tickets for a guess .as to the name of a doll, handsomely dressed, and donated by Mrs J Kemp, brought in £1 4s, but as none had guessed the name, it also was sold »y auction and,.realised £1 4s. At' 11.30 a very excellent supper wae handed round, after which dancing was renewed until 2.30 a.m. The Foster Bros.' orchestra supplied "excellent music, being, played,,by, Mrs; Foster; and Miss Melville. Messrs T ' Davies and H. Mellow were the M C's " and carried out .their arduous dutie^ most.
