OBITUARY.

GENERAL R. H. DAVIES.

BY TEI.EGRAPB -PRESS ASSOCIATION NEW PLYMOUTH, May 14. A private cable has been received stating that General R. H. Davies died suddenly. He commanded a brigade in' General French's first army.

There will be. very great regret throughout New Zealand, but particularly in Taranaki, at this news. General Davie s spent many years of his early hf 6 in this provincial district, and. m civil life was county engineer in -North Taranaki. But always an enthusiast in volunteering, for some, time captain of th c Hawera Mounted Rifles he found his opportunity during the Boer war. He was one of the earliest volunteers and he came out of the war a Commander of the Order of the Bath and with a first-class military reputed tion. He was given appointments under the New Zealand Territorial scheme, and justified himself in every position and later on was collated to the Imperial forces and held responsible posttions at Aldershot and other places He was always very highly appreciated by those whom he commanded as well as bv_ those under whom he served for while he was a strict disciplinarian! and personally knowing no fear, would go anywhere he asked his men to go, off duty he was one of the most kindly and pleasant of men.
