* ARREST OF A,MILLIONAIRE
TRADE WITH ENEMY AND FRAUD
POPE ORDERS PRAYERS FOR RETURN OF FRATERNAL SPIRIT.
(Received May 11, 12.20 p.m.) ROME ; May 10. The seizure of Parodi's documents show that he dispatched huge supplies of jute to Germany via Chiasso. In order to defraud the Customs the consignments were disguised as hemp and tow.
A great fire occurred early in 1917 in the national rope-making manufacturies at Cornigliano, in. which a large quantity, of enemy jute was destroyed. Parodi falsified the accounts and secured money as though the jute belonged to Italians.
'Parodi was recently criticised for keeping a large number of merchant steamers idle at Genoa and obstructing Allied traffic.
The Pope has ordered priests throughout the world to celebrate Mass on June 29th, praying that peace and a fraternal spirit will soon return to all peoples. The Pope concludes by expressing the ardent hope that, among all nations justice and peace may exchange a kiss. —Aus.-N.Z Cable Association.
