Lieut. P. Meredith, who is weir known m Hawera, where he was at, one time on the staff of the Hawera fctar, has returned to New Zealand after three years ispent on active service. He was invalided home after a severe bout of illness.

We are asked to state that S L Hall, whose name appeared in the Oallot yesterday, died in January, 1917. We understand that he had previously offered himself for active service. Hewas at the time of his death in the employ of Messrs Purser and Son, Hawera;
Advice ha 6 been received in Hawera that Private D. ("Dave") Bryant was. killed in action "somewhere in France" on April 8. Private Bryant, who was. about 31 years of age and single, left with the 24th Reinforcements, and had been on active service for fifteen months. Previous to enlisting Private | Bryant was a partner in the firm of j Messrs Burgess and Flan, Hawera. He was perhaps better known in the Waimate district, where he was for some | time employed as a motor 'bus driver |by Mrr J. Mourie. Before coming to this district Private Bryant was with the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington. Private Bryant was of a retiring disposition, but he was well liked by all who knew him. Mr Thomas Rice Gillman, known as the "father of Onehunga," died on Monday (says an exchange). Mr Gillman celebrated the- ninetieth anniversary of his birth last July. He arrived in New Zealand in 1863. by the ship Annie Wilson, and shortly afterwards settled in Onehunga. where he had resided, ever since
