ARARATA.

From Our Own Correspondent.)

RED CROSS FUND

The first of the series of social even- I mgs on behalf of _the Red Cross Fund j was held last Friday evening, and prov- j ed a great success. Favored by the weather, a large contingent of friends from Turuturu Road wore able to attend, and they materially helped in making the gathering both pleasant and successful. Mrs Jas. Winks kindly provided the music for dancing, and during the evening various competitions took place. Mr Willan, M.C., in the interval, introduced Mrs Lovell, of Hawera, who came to give an address on the work of the Red Cross 'Association. The address was listened to with much interest, and in the course of it Mrs Lovell sketched out the Red Cross movement from its inception down to its present working. At the close of the address a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Lovell, and hopes were expressed that she would again visit Ararata and speak on the subject. The school children take a great interest in this cause, and their interest took the j form of selling seeds and plants grown in the school gardens. Their efforts realised the sum of 18s 9d, which amount they hope to augment at future meetings. The singing of the National Anthem brought the proceedings to a close.

The next social will be held on Friday, May 3, when a special competition for the most useful article made from any material usually considered "waste," will take place.

ANZAC DAY

By direction of the Education Board the school was closed to commemorate Anzac Day. Before dismissing the pupils on Wednesday, an address was given on the day and what it means to New Zealand.
