Dillon Carbery (formerly of Stratford) to be senior medical officer, New Zealand Command DepotWord has been received that Gunner Walter Bolger has been gassed and admitted to hospital in France on March 25th. Gunner Bolger left with the 15t Reinforcements, and has seen most of the heavy fighting in France. His many friends wish him a speedy recovery. •

It is understood (says an exchange) that as an outcome of the change of administration in regard to returned soldiers, Dr. Valiritine will be transferred as from next financial year to the Defence Department, and have charge of all activities connected with the military side of the hospitals. A Melbourne.message states that Sir William Irvine, ex-Premier and Attor-ney-General, has been appointed Chief Justice of Victoria. A Sydney message states that- the Governor-General presented Nurse "M. Cameron v of the New" Zealand Nursing Service, with the insignia of the Royal Red Cross, first-class. Mrs Fookes, widow of Mr A. C. Fookes (for many years in business at Waver ley), died at New Plymouth yesterday. She came to New Zealand with her parents (the late Mr and Mrs I Hirst) sixty-six years ago, the family residing at Bell Block prior to the Maori war. The deceased lady- leaves six sons and five daughters, besides a large circle of friends, to mourn their, loss.
