THE COAL STRIKERS.
"FAIB CHANCE OF SETTLEMENT.' 1
J .i.On.v? h.ursday th& Pr^e Minister and the Minister of Mines had another conference with the representatives of the miners on the West Coast who have been on strike for some weeks. -i{Fh6 strike situation was also considered at a meeting of Cabinet held during the day, and.a definite decision was arrived' at, whach was communicated to the union delegates who had met the Ministers earlier in the day." ,■'•■.. Th^ union representatives returned, to^the Coast by_ the steamer leaving on Thursday, to communicate to the two sections of the men at the State Mine the decision of. tfie Government. A somewhat mmilar arrangement is to apply to the Paparoa strike, bnt a representative of the Labor Department is to be present at this mine to take, it may be presumed, some part in the negotiations there. Communicating this information to the Wellington papers on Thursday. Mr Massey said that there seemed to be a/ L ai^ cllance °* the beW setfcled.
. It may be taken for granted that in regard to tie trouble at the State mines the Government has.toldi the men that they must return to work by a certain date and that if they failed to do so tf?e Government would have to enforce the law against them. o>his should mean that if the men do not go to work in about a week, or possibly earlier, the War Resmlations will b© enforced.
