TURKISH FORCE DESTROYED
3000 PRISONERS TAKEN
LONDON, March 28. A Turkish force was destroyed in the Hit area-, Mesopotamia. Three thousand prisoners were taken. Mesopotamia, official. —We carried out on the 26th a highly successful operation on the Euphrates, north-west of Hit, leading to the capture or destruction of virtually the entire Turkish force in that area.
We in the early morning attacked positions about Khanbaghdadieh, 22 miles north-west of Hit. the cavalry making a wide movement around the Turkish right and establishing itself astride the Aleppo Roa& in the enemy's rear. By nightfall the main positions had been carried by assault. The enemy's main body, when attempting to break to the north_-westward, was intercepted by our cavalry and repulsed with heavy losses.
So far, it is reported that 3'KjQ prisoners were taken, including a divisional commander and 200 other Turkish officers, a German officer, a few German non-coms., ten guns. 2000 rifles and many machine guns. The remaining fugitives were pursued beyond Haditha, 45 miles north-west of Hit. Our casualties were slight.
