EXEMPTION APPEALS

CASES BEFOE.E THE BOARD

The Military Appeal Board yesterday dealt with the following cases in. addition to those already published: The appeal of Howard Albert* Bayly, farmer, Stratford/was allowed, appellant being in Class D.

The appeal of G. E. Williamson, laborer, Tariki, for whom Mr ODea appeared, was withdrawn and formally dismissed.

The appeal of George Haslett Mattock, stock agent, Eltham, was allowed, appellant being in Class B. The appeal of Charles Jackson, horse trainer, Hawera, was adjourned until the next sitting to enable the appellant to be medically examined. Mr ODea appeared for the appellant. The appeal of Kenneth Archibald Oarmichael, farmer, Kakaramea (Mr F. C. Spratt) was withdrawn and formally dismissed.

The appeal of Martin Job Aldridge, laborer, Stratford, on the ground that he was called up in the wrong class, was allowed, he being in Class C. The appeal of John Johnstone, laborer, Waverley (Mr Graham) was withdrawn, and leave granted until April 30.

The appeal of James Henry Mortlock, motor mechanic, Hawera, was formally dismissed, appellant having been medically boarded C2 —home service.

The appeal of Alfred James Bailey, baker, Hawera, was allowed., appellant being in Class D.

George Edward Staines Daniel, sheep farmer, Omata Valley, Waitotara,'appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship. Mr Graham appeared for the appellant, who gave evidence that his farm consisted of 2350 acres. His partner, a, brother, was at the front. There was also one other brother on active service, while another had been killed. The farm would not stand a manager. The Board granted the appellant exemptipn sine die, with the usual provision that he is to report to the group commander monthly that he is still in his present position. The appeal of Hilton Burn, branch manager, Hawera, was allowed, appellant being in Class B.

The appeal of Frank Dean, laborer, Kaponga, which was previously before the Board, was further adjourned until April.

The appeal of Louis Pepperill Rogers. dairy farmer, Stratford, was allowed, appellant being in Glass D. The appeal of Arthur Robert Farmer, motor engineer, Waipawa, formerly of Stratford, was adjourned until the next sitting for the production of marriage certificate.

The appeals of Richard Carey, farmer, Auroa, and Thomas Farrell, book official, Stratford, were formally dismissed, appellants having been medically boarded C2—home service.

The appeal of Leo My In Espagne, business manager, Ashburton, was referred to the Canterbury Military Ser-* vice Board. Mr Powell,' who appeared for the appellant, said the reservist had no objection. The reason appellant had his appeal transferred to Ha-. wera was because he happened to be in this district attending to the business affairs of his aged mother, which he supervised. He thought he could "kill two birds with one stone."

The Board considered it would be establishing a precedent if it heard an appeal from a district outside of its area, and it resolved to refer the appeal to the Canterbury Board. The appeal of Cyril Henry Harden, sheep farmer, Waverley, was dismissed, as tfijere was no appearance of the appellant.

The following appeals were allowed, appellants having been wrongly classified in the Second Division: Albert Victor Moss, sheep farmer, Kohuratahi (Class C); William Treanor farmer, Normanby (Class D); William Abraham Wallis, farmer, Oaonui (Class C); George Freeman Willcocks, farmer, Inaha (Class C); William George Ogg, traveller, Hawera (Class C); Albert James Hopcroft, factory manager, Normanby (Class B). Charles Zinsli, coach painter. Hawera, had his appeal allowed, appellant being under age. The Board gave its reserved decision in the case of George Donald McGregor, and granted the appellant exemption sine die.

The Board adjourned until this morning.
