AT ALL COSTS.

GALLANT MAJOR'S DEATH,

LONDON, Dec. 20,

Amongst the V.C. winners gazetted oi-. Wednesday was Major Alexander Lafone (late of the Yeomanry). For seven hours in the semi-darkness he held a position against heavy shelling and cavalry charges. Unfortunately aU his men except three were hit, and he ordered those who could walk to move slightly to the rear. Then he continued his most heroic resistance. When finally surrounded and charged by the enemy he stepped into the open and continued to fight until mortally wounded, thus carrying out bis orders to hold his position at all costs.
