TAUMARUNUI BURGLARY.
DISCOVERIES BY THE POLICE.
BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS AfS-Oa-TIOM. TAUMARUNUI, Jan. 3. The police have been following up a clue to the burglary on Christmas morning, when £300 worth of jewellery was stolen from the safe of Frankland and Hart, butchers, where it was placed for safe keeping by Wm. Wallen, an adjoining shopkeeper. Frankland had, fortunately, removed his takings (£300) from the safe the previous night, and remembers that after the time of the burglary his bedroom door in the hotel was tried by someone, but was found locked. The burglars were evidently looking for money and expected to find it in the safe. Frankland had foolishly made known in the town that he had a good sum of money on hand, and was staying at home for the holidays to protect it. Detective Cooney and Sergeant Miller, on searching the Wanganui river bed near the tennis courts, discovered a tin box which contained jewellery when it wa s stolen. They also found the sack which had been used to carry the ha.ul away. The tin and the sack were both damaged by the explosions 'in the safe. Twenty chains from the first find, a cardboard holder and £15 worth of jewellery was discovered. Further develepments are expected shortly.
