DROWNING TRAGEDY.

BT CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—OQPYRIGHT.

OAMARU, Jan. 1

A distressing drowning fatality occurred on Oamaru beach at noon to-day. Walter Brown, aged 15, a son of Walter Brown, a railway surfaceman, of Christchurch, who was fishing with his cousin, Andrew Medcaff, fell into the surf off the storm water discharge pipe. The boy Medcaff pluckily dived to the rescue, but was unsuccessful, and got into difficulties himself. A younger sister of Medcaff waded in up to her shoulders and brought her brother on to the shore. The body of Brown was recovered, but artificial respiration failed to restore breathing.
