NORMANBY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
THE LATE MRS BOWMAN
A very old colonist in the person of the late Mrs S. Bowman passed quietly away early on Sunday morning after a short illness. Born in Wigtonshire, Scotland, the deceased lady came to New Zealand 54 years ago, just two years later than her husband, who arrived at Dunedin by the ship Salistria in October, 1861. Although born within a few miles of each other in Scotland,. Mr and Mrs Bowman had not met before they came to New Zealand. They were married at Palmerston South 52 yeai;s ago. In 1881 Mr Bowman started work at the Edendale cheese factory, where he was employed for some years, and it is believed that he is the oldest living cheesemaker in the Dominion. After spending some time at Temuka. Mr and Mrs Bowman came to Taranaki, where the husband managed the Tokaora.and Hirstlands creameries, arid on the closing of the latter they retired and settled down, in Normanby, where they made many friends. For the last few years the late Mrs Bowman had not enjoyed the best of health, and a few weeks ago had a bad attack of bronchitis, from the effects of which she did not rally, passing peacefully away "on Sunday morning.; The. deceased lady is survived by her husband and a family of 31 children, who are scattered about the Dominion, most of them being still connected with the dairy industry. The very deepest sympathy is expressed on all sides for the bereaved husband and family. The funeral took place to-day (Wednesday) at the Waihi Cemetery, there being a large attendance.
