"His Excellency the Earl of Liverpool Governor-General of New Zealand, has addressed the following. New Year message to the people of the Dominion.:—
To the People of New .Zealand:
We have now spent five years among you, and we feel that we should like to take thi s opportunity of sending to : all New Zea'landera, whether in this Dominion'or abroad, our.warmest good wishes for 1918. 'j The past live years have for the'i: greater part been times of stress and | difficulty, calling for energy, resolu-i! "fcion, and perseverance on the. part off! every individual throughout the Em-i pire. -. i
It is true that New Year's Day id but a milestone in the epoch of thnej yet it is also a moment when ourthoughts ishould turn tp hopefulnessfor the future. Let us, therefore, all, with quiet confidence, tike courage for that which lies b_efore us, stimulated, as we are daily, by the valiant deeds of our sailors and soldiers who have borne the hardships of nearly three and a half years bravely and cheerfully; and pray that the vie-, tory for which we so earnestly long may, through an all-wise Providence,, be attained during this New Year which has just dawned.
