THE FRENCH GENERALISSIMO.
General Petain employs his leisure time in gardening, or at least, in superintending it. He obtained permission from the landlord of the chateau which he inhabits, with his Headquarters Staff, to do what he liked with the ground surrounding the house. Thereupon he changed the cultivation of flowers to the cultivation of vegetables, and potatoes, beans, and spinach now flourish where grew formerly the familier summer blooms. Enough food is grown for the military household.
