I Second-Lieutenant L. W. Bassett, » who will be well remembered by many people in Hawera, and especially in Meremere, where he was school teaching for four or five years, was wounded and gassed in one of the engagements m France on October 12th. The following cablegram has been received by Mr S. Turner, representing J. and J. Lonsdale and Co., London: New Zealand butter maximum advanced to 224s for salted and 227s for unsalted. A special meeting of the Taumarunui Licensing Committee was held at Waitara on Friday afternoon to hear an application brought by the police under the War Regulations for the cancellation of the license of Charles George White in respect to the Waitara Hotel (reports the Taranaki Hei-ald). It was the first application of its kind heard in New Zealand. The proceedings formed the sequel to incidents which occurred at the hotel during August, a<s the result of which the licensee was convicted on a number of charges of having permitted treating. After having been addressed by Sub-Inspector flutton in support of the application and by Mr A. H. Johnstons on behalf of the licensee, the committee retired to consider the application, and upon returning the chairman said the application could not be granted. In the absence of any evidence upon the point, the committee had come to the conclusion that the hotel had been properly conducted, and looked upon this as an isolated case, and not one of a series of breaches of th© regulations. Had there been evidence of other occasions, then the committee would probably have considered it to be in the public interest that the license should be cancelled. He need hardly express the hope that the licensee would be extremely careful to comply with the regulations in the future.
