THE ANGLO-FRENCH ATTACK
FIRST OBJECTIVES GAINED BY
NOON
TWO DISTINCT BATTLES IN
PROGRESS.
BT CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. (Received Oct. 27, 11.30 a.m.)
LONDON, Oct. 26. The United Press states that the Allies had taken practically all their first objectives by noon, and were still advancing along the Passchendaele spurs around Gheluvelt, and had penetrated deeper into Houthulst wood.
The fighting resolved itself into two distinct battles, the first by the AngloFrench forces from Daasbank to below the Ypres-Roulers railway, and the second along a short front centreing at Gheluvelt.
The correspondent emphasises the fact that no attack took place on the portion of the line situated between the two battles, because, in view of their recent lies, the Germans are almost certain to claim that they checked an adyance there, although none was attempted. The German artillery replied only moderately, the British concentration of shellfire at night time obviously having had its effect.
