RETORTED SOLDIERS.
On Thursday a welcome home was given to several Hawera soldiers just back from the front. The Mayor and Rev. C. H. Grant Cowen were present, representing the Patriotic Committee of Hawera. The Mayor said it gave him, on behalf of the people of the town and district, the greatest pleasure in welcoming Lieut. Strack, Corporal Clee, Privates Faulkner and New back to Hawera. All would acknowledge that they had done their duty, and that was something of which any man might be proud. At his call hearty cheers were given for the returned soldiers. Lieut. Strack, speaking on behalf of himself and comrades, said it was very pleasant to be back in New Zealand and in Hawera. It was he added, difficult to realise that they were back. He thought that the men still at the front deserved the cheers, and for them he asked all to join and give three hearty cheers. The men were then taken in cars to their respective homes.
