CHURCH SOCIAL,

The_ Anglican community held nieirannual social in the Town Hall on. Wednesday evening, when there -was *-- good attendance, the Key. C. H. Grant Co wen presiding. A capital concert programme had been arranged and wa«, thoroughly appreciated. A produce stall in aid of the Sunday School, building fund did good business, about' £p being taken. Refreshments provided by the ladies were enjoyed by all. Musical and vocal items were rendered by the following ladies and gentlemen: Hawera Choir (under the baton of Mr Burgess, Mrs Grant Cowen.. (banjo solos) encored, Sirs Sunderland ' Miss Stone, Messrs Vinnicombo, Fredericks, and the Rev. Grant Cowen, ancfc pianoforte solos by Master G. Smith and Mr Fredericks. Miss Marjorie Smith, danced an Irish jig and received a wellmerited recall. Taken all round th«> social was one of the best held here forsome years. SKATING CARNIVAL. During the winter months a skating rink has been held in the Horticultural Hall, and has proved very popular,» and the organisers, with Mr O. Paine, jun., at the nead, are to be. commended for their efforts to provide -. healthy amusement for the young people. As a fitting termination to the season a plain and fancy dress car- - nival was held on Thursday, which, taking into consideration the very unpro--pitious weather, was very well attended. Prizes were offered for the best, fancy costumes (ladies and gentlemen), and were judged by popular vote. Miss ; Andrews (nurse) and .Mr J. Colman (Charlie Chaplin) proyed the -njinners.' The hall had been gaily decorated with ! flags, the floor was in good order, anda most enjoyable time was spent by all._ OUR BOYS; Very deep regret was expressed when,; news wa6 received Stanley,. youngest son of Mr Shrimpton, formany year* a- resident here, had been, killed iji action. The deceased soldier - was born in Norman by, and received, hie early education here, and will be., remembered as a manly little fellow by many still residing here, who, I am. sure, will join with me in expressing.; the hope that time will heal • his i parentsr sorrow, aad that the memory of hi« glorious death will in some wa^j* comfort them in their very great loss. The many friends of Private W.Laurent, who has been wounded, will,. I am sure, wish him a speedy recovery - to robust health.
